World Cup Result Day Seven

Argentina vs South Korea : 4-1 Grup B
Argentina all but assured their advancement to the knockout stage with a 4-1 defeat of South Korea in Thursday’s early match which included an own goal and a hat trick by Gonzalo Higuain. The South Americans broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Lionel Messi’s cross deflected off Park Chu-Young’s shin for an own goal. Higuain added his first goal 17 minutes later by heading home Nicolas Burdisso’s headed pass off a Maxi Rodriguez cross.
Greece vs Nigeria : 2-1 Grup B
Dimitrios Salpingidis and Vasileios Torosidis scored to earn Greece a 2-1 comeback victory over ten-man Nigeria – their first triumph on the world stage.
The loss puts Nigeria’s hopes of qualification in serious doubt. They must beat South Korea by at least two clear goals and hope for a Argentina victory over Greece on Wednesday.
Mexico vs France : 2-0 Grup A
Substitutes Javier Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco were on target as Mexico claimed a thoroughly deserved 2-0 win over France in Polokwane.
Mexico need only to draw against Uraguay on Wednesday. Group-leaders Uraguay are in a similar position, with a draw guaranteeing first place in the group.

World Cup Result Day Six

Honduras vs Chile : 0-1
Chile ended a wait of almost half a century for a victory on the world stage by defeating Honduras 1-0 in their opening Group H game in Nelspruit.
Jean Beausejour’s 34th minute tap-in snapped Chile’s 48-year World Cup winless drought to down Honduras in both team’s opening match. Chile dominated play, possessing the ball 64% of the time and had many chances to extend their lead. ”We could have scored more goals and we were on top,” Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa said. “You can’t foresee what will happen, but if the group is decided in that way [on goal difference], then we will rue the chances we missed.”
Spain vs Switzerland : 0-1
Switzerland pulled off the biggest surprise so far at this FIFA World Cup™ as Gelson Fernandes's second-half strike downed Spain.
Gelson Fernandes’ 52nd minute goal gave Switzerland one of the shocks of the tournament by defeating European champions Spain. On a rare Switzerland counterattack Eren Derdiyok beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas but his shot was blocked by Gerard Pique. Pique could not control the ball, however, and allowed Fernandes to bury the rebound.
South Africa vs Uruguay : 0-3
A Diego Forlan double silenced the crowd for the first time during South Africa 2010 as Uruguay dealt the host nation's chance of reaching the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup a major blow.
Diego Forlan scored a brace to move Uraguay into first place in group A with a 3-0 victory over South Africa. Forlan opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a bullet from 30-yards out that beat Itumeleng Khune. The lead was doubled after Luis Suarez drew a penalty in the 76th minute. Suarez beat the offsides trap and was taken out by Khune as he cut across the face of goal. Khune was shown a red card and Forlan beat replacement keeper Moeneeb Josephs from the spot. Alvaro Pereira finished off the route with a headed goal deep into stoppage time.

World Cup Result Day Five

New Zealand vs Slovakia : 1-1 Grup F
A last-gasp Winston Reid header snatched New Zealand an improbable draw against a dominant Slovakia side in their Group F opener in Rustenburg.
Côte d'Ivoire vs Portugal : 0-0 Grup G
Côte d'Ivoire and Portugal showed plenty of ability but ultimately could not break the other down, battling to a hard-fought scoreless draw.
Brazil vs Korea DPR : 2-1 Grup G
Brazil secured an opening 2-1 victory over Korea DPR through goals from Maicon and Elano but the Asian outsiders made them work hard for their win.

World Cup Result Day Four

Two surprise results highlight the fourth day of action of South Africa 2010. Netherlands win over Denmark, Japan’s first World Cup win away from home (beating Cameroon), and Paraguay drawing with reigning champions Italy.
Netherlands vs Denmark : 2-0 Grup E
An impressive second half performance from the Netherlands earned Bert van Marwijk's Oranje side a 2-0 victory over Denmark at Soccer City.
Japan vs Cameroon : 1-0 Grup E
Japan recorded their first FIFA World Cup win on foreign soil after Keisuke Honda's first-half goal downed Cameroon at the Free State Stadium.
Italy vs Paraguay : 1-1 Grup F
Italy opened their FIFA World Cup™ defence with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw in Group F against Paraguay on a rainy Monday night in Cape Town.

World Cup Result Day Three

Slovenia vs Algeria : 1-0
A late goal from Robert Koren handed Slovenia their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory as well as the top spot in Group C as they beat 10-man Algeria 1-0 in Polokwane.
German vs Australia : 4-0
Germany began their Group D campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win over 10-man Australia, with Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller and Cacau all finding the net in Durban.
Ghana vs Serbia : 1-0
Ghana emerged deserved winners over Serbia in their Group D opener, although they needed a little help from their opponents and a late penalty to seize the points.

World Cup Result Day Two

England vs USA : 1-1
A terrible mistake from England’s Robert Green gave USA a share of the spoils in Group C’s opening match played in front of a passionate crowd in Rustenburg. The goalkeeper, given the nod by Fabio Capello to start the match ahead of David James and Joe Hart, allowed Clint Dempsey’s 25-yard drive to slip through his grasp, giving last year’s FIFA Confederations Cup finalists a deserved share of the spoils.
Argentina vs Nigeria : 1-0
Gabriel Heinze's early goal earned Argentina a 1-0 victory over Nigeria and they might have won by more but for Super Eagles keeper Vincent Enyeama.
Korea Republic vs Greece : 2-0
Korea Republic claimed the honour of recording the first victory at South Africa 2010 as Lee Jung-Soo and Park Ji-Sung struck to down Greece 2-0.
